Recently, rumors have been flying around that the Boston Celtics are looking for a big man to help sure up their reboudning woes. After losing Chris Wilcox for 4-5 weeks due to a thumb injury, they added D-League shot blocking expert Jarvis Varnado. The former 41st overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft has had a very good season in the D-League. He has averaged around 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game. Last year, Boston made a very similar move with the addition of Greg Stiemsma (now a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves). But it remains no secret that Boston lack depth at the center position. Courtney Lee’s name has been floating around recently, and with the travesty of a season he’s having so far, Boston is looking to move him. Here are some players who the Celtics must go after by the trade deadline.
The 6’11 centre for the Cleveland Cavaliers is having a career season. Though he doesn’t have the offensive skill-set that many teams would like from a top center, he is one of the league’s best rebounders and post defenders. He has a fairly large contract, but the Cavs don’t appear to be asking for very much (according to reports). He is one of the most underrated players in the NBA, and is exactly what Boston is lacking. Expected to be traded by the deadline this season, the Celtics must make a push for Varejao. He should be their #1 target right now.
AL JEFFERSON (or PAUL MILLSAP)
Like Varejao, these Utah Jazz bigmen are rumoured to be on the trading block all season long. They too, are very underrated for the level they play at. Boston’s preference would likely be Jefferson, as he is bigger and has a past with the team. He also made a statement saying that if he is unable to stay in Utah, his second choice would be Boston. But he would also cost more than Millsap and Varejao. Boston would likely have to put together a big package if they want to get Big Al back in Beantown.
Out of all the players on this list, Gortat has been the most linked to Boston. He has made it clear that he does not want to stay with the Suns, and it was rumored that the Celtics had been planning to make an offer to Phoenix for him. Yet another underrated force in the paint, Gortat would fit very nicely with Boston. And with the Suns in a rebuilding faze, they will likely look to deal him. Even if it isn’t for much.
